linkBrandman gives her number as 52643. Archives give a different person: The dates correspond as does the ghetto but this person died in Auschwitz; Brandmans name appears on a list here. Birkenau was in operation from march 42,but this jรผdin makes it clear she was transported by train to Auschwitz 1 with its signature sign, then walked the 3.5 km to Birkenau. Of course she meets Dr Mengele, they all do. She goes on to say that there was no bathing which is to imply no showering either. The reality is as follows: link- Inmates were give soap once a month
- Expected to wash every day
- Expected to shower once a week
- Clothing disinfested with steam every 6 weeks and mended
- Floors scrubbed fastidiously every day
- Bunk beds made up properly daily
The inmates were responsible for maintaining the latrines and facilities; it is a fact that they failed to do so, probably expecting the Germans to do it for them as in a hotel. Pierre Berg maintains in his book that the Germans were insistant on inmate hygiene necessary to prevent disease.
