It is apparent that many people, (especially in the US) are ignorant of the scientific method. Those in Europe are on the whole better educated in scientific disciplines such as physics, chemistry, biology and a host of others. Science is a body of knowledge as well as a method of obtaining information about the "real world", not the world as we imagine it to be. The methods science use involve testing hypothesis through experimentation (not always) and then statistical analysis to check if some potential cause is related to an effect, or if there is some correlation. 100% certainty in the scientific method gives a probability of 1, which is never absolute. Science always leaves room for doubt, no matter how implausible, so nothing can be stated as fact. Even the temporal demise of people cannot be used as evidence of certainty as that implies a deeper knowledge of space-time than anyone really has at the moment; to use the current understanding of what we know is a 'priori' and a matter of truth by definition alone, just as a circle is round by definition; anything else is not a circle, flying buffalo's are not buffalo's by definition as buffalo's do not fly. People like absolute certainty in their lives, but science cannot give them that, only probabilities. The important point is that knowledge cannot be gained by thought alone but only by interacting with the real world; even math where 2 +2 = 4 is uncertain even with simple chemistry. 1ml of water + 1 ml of ethanol โ 2 ml

Venatแปr:
"Science always leaves room for doubt, no matter how implausible, so nothing can be stated as fact."
That is only something that a child would say and/or agree with.
According to Venatแปr, if one to were to eat an entire case of animal crackers, a monkey might, no matter how implausible it may sound, fly out of ones ass.
Yessiree those Europeans knowledge of science is the envy of the world.

That's not exactly what he said. But for the sake of argument, IF the probability of getting a monkey out of an ass is non-Zero, then given enough chances in the timeline of the universe of animal crackers, it should happen sometime, however improbable โ assuming that the universe lasts long enough, of course. In fact, Science is not canon but a working draft of observational evidence that has met a rigorous process of fact-checking and testable hypotheses. This means that the "Settled Science" is highly continent or REVISIONIST. Historiography is, likewise, all about a process or REVISION as an empirical observational discipline has evolved, thus bringing the prevalent paradigm "into accord with the facts."

It is exactly what he said:
Venatแปr:
"Science always leaves room for doubt, no matter how implausible, so nothing can be stated as fact."
He made a statement of fact that nothing can be stated as fact.
He contradicts himself.
Only a child could believe that nothing can be stated as fact.

Depends on how you are using the term Fact โ as a pixel or as a picture. The etymology of a Fact as something monolithically-true is more modern. An older definition was related to chronicling deeds or feats โ swapping fish tales, so to speak. Facts are not monolithic and neither are pictures. Pictures are composed of Pixels. A Pixel (a portmanteau of picture-element) could be discretely monolithic if you are unable to break it down further. The common phrase "Splitting the Atom" is a pretty clever use of semantics โ given that the term Atom itself is from Greek and means indivisible by definition. Chemistry doesn't split atoms but modern Physics certainly does. And both can be excessively reductionist. Science is not monolithic either but ultimately a "viewpoint." It may or may not be a clear viewpoint Sometimes even Probability is necessary to paint a useful picture. Albert Einstein, the Nobel Laureate and patron saint of "Jewish Physics," did not like this. "God does not play dice," he declared.

Scott:
"Depends on how you are using the term Fact"
Or what the definition of is is.
It is an irrefutable fact that Venatแปr posted the following statement of fact:
"Science always leaves room for doubt, no matter how implausible, so nothing can be stated as fact."
Except Venatแปr's contradictory statement of fact above of course.
