Took one of my periodical peeks at the Skeptics forum and just for giggles clicked on their "guns" thread. There is almost universal agreement by the usual denizens that guns shouldn't be owned by ordinary citizens. Guns beget more violence, are involved in avoidable killings, are for those not trained in the manly art of self defense, negroes are no more prone to violence than White men and so on with the endless list of typical libturd platitudes. Guns are essentially useless especially as a means of self defense.
I find it mildly amusing that those who are so dedicated to the claim that the defenseless Jews were rounded up by the eeevul Narzis and sent to camps for the purpose of being murdered by the million with poison gas are also dedicated to the concept that guns as a means of self defense is useless. Well, nobody ever accused the hoaxers of being rational.

I guess those idiots have never been hunting. I do think there should be some kind of vetting in the US so that nutters have limited access; seems to work elsewhere.

The problem with "vetting" is that it doesn't keep guns out of the hands of the prohibited. Note the proliferation of guns amongst negro felons who are prohibited from owning firearms. Note the recent assassination of the Japanese politician. Neither would I trust government to perform the vetting procedure. See also the Biden administration (fiasco?) and his AG, the Jew Merrick Garland. He's the guy who declared that "White supremacists" were the primary terrorist threat in the US.

You are right of course. Firearms are heavily restricted in Nordic countries but terrorism occurs. In the US I think the horse has bolted so little point in shutting the barn door. Vetting might keep arms out of the nutters and school kid wannabes.

Indeed and the estimate for the number of guns in the US is little more than a wild guess. There's no shortage of functional firearms dating back to the 19th century. That is, guns that fire readily available ammunition and are essentially "modern" firearms. Activists who support the 2nd amendment have made some notable legal gains lately. There's currently a challenge to the 1933 NFA (National Firearms Act) which would return machine guns to ordinary gun status. IOW, the tax and the bureaucratic BS required to own fully automatic weapons has a very good chance of being declared unconstitutional.
Rock n' roll (full automatic) guns are fun but the true cost of an MG is the ammo it eats. Even a .22 bunny gun can get expensive when shooting full auto. At any rate, declaring the NFA unconstitutional would be worth it just for the great wailing and gnashing of teeth that would come from anti-gun leftists. A sound as pleasant to my ears as that of a great symphony.
