To start this topic-thread off, here is an example of a very successful recent forger of faked ’historical’ documents. His name was Mark Hofmann. Without any training he became expert in creating convincing ink recipes that matched ancient ones, of accessing ancient paper stock and with other trickery managed to create forgeries that fooled the relevant historians and ’experts’. One of his forgeries involved a vacuum cleaner used to suck paint to the back side of a document to mimic what happens naturally over time.
Netflix created a documentary about him and the wider ramifications of his successful scam. It is called Murder among the Mormons, and is a three-part series.
