Here is a video that combines an account of Napoleon Bonaparteโs Russian campaign of 1812 from the perspective of a Russian officer, illustrated with illustrations and paintings of that campaign
It is fascinating for a.) the detail of the battles and their aftermath, as also for b.) the patriotic self-delusion regarding what the conflict and resulting battles were precipitated by.
It demonstrates that then as now, the common man has no idea what the fighting he wholeheartedly supports is all about. He only is convinced that he is on the side of the โgood guysโ and the enemy are on the side of evil.
In this case the narrating participant knows and acknowledges that some of his protagonists were Poles who previously he had regarded as comrades-in-arms and had partied and celebrated with. So โ just as with Russians and Germans celebrating and partying together after invading Poland in 1939 but then becoming bitter enemies โ it demonstrates how easily men can justify their actions, allegiances and enmities.
Interesting also is that NOW Napoleon is regarded as a brilliant leader, strategist and military commander. But THEN โ as currently with Adolf Hitler โ he was falsely and naively demonised with religious symbolism as some diabolical anti-Christ figure motivated by nothing but evil and intent only on causing suffering and world conquest. ๐คฆโโ๏ธ
This demonstrates how time of at least one hundred years is required BEFORE history is viewed accurately and without bias.
