Place to test

As a child every spare penny I had was spent on Airfix soldiers and many a happy hour was spent making opposed landings on the French coast during WWII and re-enacting the battle of Waterloo. Being an army barmy Airfix nerd I was very lucky because the newsagents shop less than 300 meters from where I lived always had beautifully painted dioramas in the windows and stocked just about every Airfix and Tamyia model a young lad could wish for.

I preferred building the tanks to the aeroplanes. Whoever designed the Airfix Panther tank model deserves to have been gassed because the wheel axles were not cast as part of the hull and had to be glued on individually (there was no guide to their correct position apart from the naked eye if my memory serves me correctly). I was also a bit pissed off that Airfix never did an Sd.Kfz. 251 model and I had to equip my Panzer Grenadiers with vehicles from another company which used a slightly smaller scale than Airfix.

Tamiya, yes seriously good looking model kits. Things could have turned out very differently for Fish if Airfix had just thought a bit harder about their plastic assembly construction kits.

Lol! This thread has got me going all psycho and I've been doing some time wasting research into early 70's plastic models. I am now certain I have identified ESCI as the producer of my Panzer Grenadiers half tracks. Sadly the company is no longer in business if Wikipedia is to be believed.

Here is one of the variants of the Sd.Kfz. 251 I once owned as a child.

Ah, yes, the Nebelwerfer rockets, or "Stukas on Foot," aka Screaming Mimi's.
