Lyrics only. Bruce Cockburn wrote this in my home town, Toronto. Originally inspired by Bruce's visits to Latin America, and witnessing corruption at a grass-roots level involving the IMF, along with anonymous Latin American meat-packing glitterati.

They Call it Democracy

"Padded with power here they come
International loan sharks backed by the guns
Of market hungry military profiteers
Whose word is a swamp and whose brow is smeared
With the blood of the poor

Who rob life of its quality
Who render rage a necessity
By turning countries into labour camps
Modern slavers in drag as champions of freedom

Sinister cynical instrument
Who makes the gun into a sacrament
The only response to the deification
Of tyranny by so called "developed" nations'
Idolatry of ideology

Kill the best and buy the rest
It's just spend a buck to make a buck
You don't really give a flying fuck
About the people in misery

I-M-F dirty M-F
Takes away everything it can get
Always making certain that there's one thing left
Keep them on the hook with insupportable debt

See the paid off local bottom feeders
Passing themselves off as leaders
Kiss the ladies, shake hands with the fellows
And it's open for business like a cheap bordello

And they call it democracy
And they call it democracy
And they call it democracy
And they call it democracy

See the loaded eyes of the children too
Trying to make the best of it the way kids do
One day you're going to rise from your habitual feast
To find yourself staring down the throat of the beast
They call the revolution."

"The transformation of America from a society dominated-and shaped-by a white Anglo-saxon Protestant culture into a global mosaic inevitably will involve a profound shift in values and perhaps some further loss of social cohesion. While such a change may generate new creativity and dynamism - and its intellectual and human benefits are undeniable - it is also likely to be disruptive, even potentially divisive, especially if in the process the unifying function of a common language and of an inculcated common political philosophy are deliberately downgraded. A shared language and a shared constitutional commitment produce the common foundation on which a nation's cultural consensus rests, and without them cultural diversity could become incapable of sustaining social tolerance. The American society could then face disintegration.
It is easy to label such a concern as racist but to do so is to evade - and even precipitate - the resulting problems. One simply cannot ignore the high probability that the recreation of the global cultural and ethnic mosaic within a very differentiated America will actually make it more difficult to address the social and cultural dilemmas that the country confronts. Indeed, in the absence of major progress in dealing compassionately with these dilemmas, the new mosaic could generate within America even escalating urban guerilla warfare. To say this is not tantamount to the rejection of the change in the ethnic makeup of America that in any case is almost inevitable, but it is to suggest that the needed cultural renewal is more likely to be forthcoming if the essential linguistic and philosophical sources of national unity are deliberately preserved."
- Zbigniew Brzezinski, 1993

In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the moon landing hoax:
You gotta love that they change the H-E-double-hockey-stick lyric! :D

I wonder if they've done a version of Major Tom as well?
