"the worst Holocaust atrocity in Russia"

The monument to the victims of the German fascists at Rostov-on-Don. Kinda reminds me of the quennelle.
In August 1942 Nazi German troops murdered at least 27,000 people at Zmiyevskaya Balka, regarded as the worst Holocaust atrocity in Russia.

[...]

According to the Yad Vashem Holocaust Centre in Israel, 15,000-16,000 Jews were murdered by the Nazis in Rostov-on-Don from August 1942 to February 1943.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-16697485
A 2013 documentary staring Dr. Sturdy Colls and David Cesarani features Soviet film footage recently discovered by Dr. Jeremy Hicks that was reputedly shot in 1943 and shows a very public unearthing of a mass grave in a ravine called Zmiyevskaya Balka ("Snakes Valley", or "Snake Pit", or "the Ravine of the Snakes," apparently) in Rostov-on-Don, which, the documentary claims, contained the bodies of "12,000 Jews".

You can watch the footage from the 24 minute mark on the video. Don't let your lying eyes try to tell you they can only see a dozen-ish corpses, nor that the corpses and grave bare hallmarks of a NKVD execution.

Roberto Muehlenkamp wrote of Rostov-on-Don in 2011:
Most of the city’s about 50,000 Jews had been evacuated by the Soviets following the brief first German occupation, but about 2,000 had remained behind – mainly elderly and sick persons as well as women and children who could not or had not wanted to be evacuated. The Jews were called upon to gather at a specified place on 11 August 1942, ostensibly in order to be moved to a part of the city where they would not be exposed to acts of violence from the non-Jewish population. Actually they were taken to a place called the ravine of the snakes, where they had to deliver their valuables and undress before being shot and dumped into pre-dug sand pits. The killing had not ended by the evening of 11 August, and on the next day a gas van was brought to help finish the job. [...] The total number of persons killed by Sk 10a [Sonderkommando (Sk) 10a of Einsatzgruppe D ] in Rostov is unknown but probably exceeded the estimated 2,000 Jewish inhabitants.

http://holocaustcontroversies.blogspot. ... cists.html
Roberto states that Sk 10a was relived by Einsatzkommando 6 of Einsatzgruppe C sometime after August 11, 1942, who continued to kill any Jews they could lay their hands on. The Germans occupied Rostov until February 14, 1943, but Roberto offers no further estimates for the number they managed to find and then shoot, or put in their gas van.

Perhaps the reason for Roberto's drastic reduction of the number killed and buried in Snakes Ravine is because he knows full-well that the folks of Action 1005 are not claimed to have ever visited Rostov to clean up the mess.

Roberto wouldn't have known about the Jeremy Hicks-discovered footage when he wrote his article, although his article is essentially about Soviet atrocity footage. The video stills Roberto uses of Rostov are from the footage shot by Arkadii Levitan in December 1941 (Hicks, First Films of the Holocaust, p.49f), after the Soviets recaptured the city and ended the first German occupation (November 21 to 29, 1941). although he doesn't tell his readers that, he allows them to believe the footage could have been shot after the second and far longer German occupation (July 1942 to February 1943). But I've digressed.

It's undeniable that the Soviets did not exhume and rebury c.27,000 corpses based on the footage they shot of doing both to a relatively tiny number of corpses in 1943. Therefore Rostov still has the largest un-Blobeled, unearthed, and undocumented mass grave of the Holocaust, even though its precise location is known. And due to the fact that over 10,000 of the alleged victims buried there are gentiles, the oft invoked but never-ever cited Talmudic law about Jewish graves, can hardly be claimed as an excuse not to exhume this enormous mass grave.
We just wish to point out to the court that is not a signed sworn statement of Dr. Bender but merely a translation of an alleged or purported statement of Dr. Bender, the original of which, like many other things, is not to be found today.

Below is a few stills from the footage which the documentary presents as proof that the Soviets unearthed a mass grave containing the corpses of 12,000 Jews in Rostov-on-Don.

The documentary admits that same c.dozen bodies shown in A, B, and C are probably PoWs, as they have their hands tied behind their backs.

Image D shows women carrying bodies on a ad-hoc stretcher, there's other footage of more women doing the same. So it's likely that the perhaps two dozen corpses shown in images E & F also feature the corpses originally shown in A, B and C.

Rostov is finally retaken in February 1943. Huge crowds gather to witness the opening of the largest Holocaust grave site so far discovered on Soviet soil.
Claims the narrator from the 24 minute mark.
http://youtu.be/svARldKz3B0?t=24m

There's some problems with this claim though.

The first is that the average temperature in Rostov-on-Don in February hovers around freezing, yet everyone in the film is in their shirt sleeves. The footage was clearly shot on a warm and sunny day.

The second is that I can find no mention of the excavation of an enormous mass grave at Rostov in the official weekly newspaper of the Soviet Embassy in the U.K., not in any of the editions printed between February 1943 and January 11, 1945, and it was a publication that printed little else other than atrocity stories and photographs. The only mention of the atrocities in Rostov-on-Don I could find was the following report from March 1943:
When the Nazis were in Rostov
(Soviet War News Weekly, published by the Soviet Embassy, London, March 18, 1943, p.4.)
The Soviet Information Bureau has published the following protocol on crimes committed by the Germans during their occupation of Rostov-on-Don. It is signed by S. Burmensky, acting chairman of the Executive Committee of the Rostov Town Soviet ; I. Zvenzek, engineer of the Zarya Brewery ; Prof. N. Stasevich ; Prof. V. Karnitsky, ; Major Y. Donskoy ; Major P. Sedov ; Capt. A. Tokar ; A. Dibrov, a worker of the "Metiz" Metal Combine ; A. Makeyeva ; representative of the "Novy Gorodok" Settlement ; V. Bocharov, foreman of the flax factory ; and S. Tokarev, technician of the Mlikoyan Factory. (Italicised in original)

AFTER the occupation of the town, Major-General Kittel organised the mass extermination of peaceful inhabitants. Many hundreds of citizens were forced to appear with their children at collection centres, bringing with them all their valuables and food for three days. At the centres they were put on lorries and driven outside the town. In the Botanical Garden and the Zoo Park the adults were shot and the children were poisoned with a strong poisonous substance which was put on their lips.

According to incomplete figures the Germans shot or poisoned 15,000-18,000 people. These included the head of the chief department of the second hospital, Prof. Kirshman, Physician Inal, Lawyer Lutsky, Assistant Director Bunyakin of the factory named after Voroshilov, and his wife, University lecturer Novikov, his 70-year-old mother, his wife and his 8-year-old son ; Doctor Shershevskaya, Medical nurse Simanovich, lathe worker Pavlovskaya and others.

During the occupation of the town, but particularly before its evacuation, the Germans plundered, blew up or burnt down many of the Rostov factories. They destroyed the Rostov Agricultural Machine Factory "Rostselmash" named after Stalin the factory "Krasny Aksai," the Lenin Locomotive Repair Factory, the "Krasnaya Svezda " (Red Star) sausage factory, the canning factory "Smychka," the Vorovsky Smelting Iron Factory, the flour and macoroni Combine No. 2, the Voroshilov Factory, one of the largest mechanised bakeries in the country, the Rostov thermo-electrical station, the bus depot, the tram depot, the tram and trolleybus system of the whole town, the post office and telegraph station, the printing works, the water supply system, the draining system, the film studios, various food factories, combines and other large enterprises and institutions.

THEY burnt over 2,000,000 books of the Regional State Library and destroyed 25 other libraries. Rare books and books of great scientific value were either destroyed or taken to Germany.

They destroyed the main buildings of the Central Hospital; the 1st, the 3rd and the 4th Polyclinics, the Polyclinic for railway workers and others. Some hospitals were destroyed together with the patients. The most valuable medical equipment and instruments were sent to Germany.

They destroyed or burnt the best public buildings : the House of Soviets, the "Intourist" and "International" restaurants, the Gorky Drama Theatre, the Estrada Theatre, the theatre for young spectators, the musical comedy theatre, the "Gigant" and "Chronica" cinemas, the House of Education, the Palace of Culture of the Stalin Machine Factory, the clubs of the Trade Unions of Electricians, of medical and first-aid workers and of communication workers, the Institute of Engineering, the Institute of Railway Transport, the scientific research laboratories and clinics of the Rostov Medical Institute, the Pedagogical Institute, the building of the faculty for physics and mathematics of the Molotov University, the technical school for communications, the technical school for building, the school of music, over 50 secondary schools, the Museum of the Revolution, the Geography Museum.

They blew up or burnt all dwelling-houses in Engels Street from the station to the Voroshilov Prospect, most buildings along Pushkin, Shaumyan and Socialist Streets, starting from the station tip to Budenny Prospect, and also a considerable number of buildings and dwelling-houses on Budenny, Theatre and Voroshilov Prospects, in the Olimpiadovka Settlement and elsewhere.

In the Gorky Park, which had been the pride of the people of Rostov, the Germans cut down the most valuable trees and destroyed the fountains and pavilions.

THE destruction of public buildings and dwelling-houses was carried out in the following manner : squads of sappers mined the houses, blew them up, poured petrol over the remnants and set them on fire. They did not consider it necessary to warn the inhabitants, and hundreds of people lost their lives beneath the ruins of the destroyed buildings.

Under threat of shooting, they deported many Rostov people to slave labour in Germany. By order of the commandant, all men between and 60 and women between 15 and 50 were registered. Their passports were taken away. They then assembled at the centres. Under threat of shooting they were put into wagons and deported to the west like cattle. Many thousands of Soviet people were sent to Germany in this way. The remaining inhabitants of Rostov were condemned to starve to death or perish from disease.

Before they retreated under the blows of the Red Army, the Germans executed in the town prison 135 inhabitants of Rostov whom they had imprisoned. Before the execution they subjected their victims to terrible tortures. They cut off their noses, gouged out their eyes, cut off their arms and legs. After that they blew up the prison building, with all the Soviet citizens imprisoned there. In the prison yard, 1,154 dead bodies were found, including 122 bodies of women and 57 bodies of children.

Among the people so far identified are Engineer Georgi Zhdanov, Anna Mikhailova, a woman worker, and others.

THE streets and squares of Rostov, red with the blood of peaceful Soviet citizens, bear the marks of monstrous crimes perpetrated by the German Fascists. Possessed by a bestial fury against the Soviet people, against our culture, against everything Russian, the Hitlerites destroyed everything that, was created by the Russian people in the long history of the town, and everything that was created by Soviet people during the 25 years. of Soviet power.

The destruction of Rostov-on-Don was not dictated by military considerations.

The blood of our brothers and sisters cries for revenge. In the name of all citizens of the town of Rostov-on-Don, we demand severe punishment of the bandits for all their base and insolent atrocities.

The Nazis electrocuted Jews in Rostov-on-Don apparently
Mass-executions of Jews by Nazis in Rostov and on Stalingrad Front
Jewish Telegraphic Agency, January 10, 1943
As the Russian Army advances toward Rostov, the Nazi military authorities there have started mass-executions–by electricity – of Jews in the city, Major Krasotkin, a Russian commander, reported today.

The executions are carried out in one of the buildings on Engels Street, in Rostov, the Russian commander stated. Jewish families, including persons of all ages, are brought to this building where they are electrocuted, German war prisoners captured by Major Krasotkin’s troops reported.

Sticking with the electrocution of Rostov's Jews...
Thousands of Jews Massacred During Nazi Occupation of Rostov, Says Moscow
Jewish Telegraphic Agency, February 24, 1943
Moscow (Feb. 23)

Thousands of Jews were among an estimated 20,000 persons murdered during the Nazi occupation of Rostov, the Moscow radio declared last night, quoting a letter sent to Premier Stalin by the citizens of Rostov. The Jews were tortured to death, burned, buried alive and electrocuted, the broadcast said. Even small children and women were not spared.

Some details on how the Nazis electrocuted the Jews of Rostov:
In Remontnoye, in the Rostov district, which was wrested from the Germans only a few days ago, one correspondent was told how the Nazis placed the entire Jewish population of the town, mainly refugees who had fled from the Ukraine, in a specially constructed barbed-wire enclosure at the out-skirts of the town. Scores of old men, women and children were forced to walk over strands of the wire which had been electrified and were electrocuted on the spot. When some of the prisoners asked for something to drink, they were given poisoned water, which killed most of them. Those who still survived were machine-gunned. In Remontnoye the Nazi score was 300 dead.

Later in the article you can read about the gas chambers c.30 miles SW of Stalingrad:
In another small village, Zhutovo, in the Stalingrad district, hundreds of Jewish evacuees from the Ukraine, were driven into lethal gas chambers and suffocated. The bodies of the victims, including many children, were flung into a ravine three kilometers from the village.

30,000 Jews just a few miles from Rostov-on-Don weren't electrocuted, but drowned in coal mines...
Nazis Drowned Thousands of Jews in Oil Wells in Russia; Others Killed in Mines
Jewish Telegraphic Agency, July 21, 1943
In the town of Shackty, which is a few miles north-east of Rostov, the advancing Red Army found the corpses of 30000 Jews who had been drowned in flooded coal mines by the fleeing Nazis, the commission’s report states.
